Vetrans Day Celebrated

November 11, 2011, Front Royal, VA – The Southerlands Retirement Community commemorated Veterans Day with a program designed to include all its residents that actively served our country or made a contribution to wartime efforts. Over twenty residents of The Southerlands served and/or had a loved one that served in the military. Our two speakers, Dr. Rick Parrish and Betsy Blauvelt, Program Services Director of The Southerlands, were the master of ceremonies for this event. Dr. Parrish began by giving the history of Veterans’ Day and the impact the federal holiday has in recognizing patriotic and historical significance. Dr. Parrish said, “I didn’t personally serve in the Armed Forces, but in my current job, I help the men and women who are serving our country today.” He also spoke of his grandfather who served in the Pacific Theatre and the impression it had upon him and his views on Veteran’s day. Betsy Blauvelt told the story of each individual resident’s wartime experience. She started by saying, “Many of the residents of The Southerlands have served their country. In addition, many women are here today to represent their loved one who served our country. We share [your stories] today in honor of all our Veterans, wives and children.” At the end of the program, each resident that participated in the event was presented with a commemorative gift. All who served in active duty were given the Challenge Coin of their Armed Services branch. Our residents that served by having a loved one in the military received a commemorative pin. Branches of the Armed Services that were represented were the United Stated Marine Corps, United States Army, Army Air Force, United States Navy, United States Air Force and the Military Police Corps. Staff member, Maria Bolton who attended the Veterans Day Celebration, was moved by all the residents that had served our country. The Southerlands was proud to honor its Veterans and plans on making this a special, annual event.

THE SOUTHERLANDS’ COOKBOOK 2011 EDITION HAS ARRIVED

November 7, 2011 Front Royal, VA – The Southerlands Retirement Community is proud to announce the arrival of their second edition cookbook titled “Our Family’s Recipes”. This hard back, spiral bound cookbook is a treasured collection of over 150 recipes from the residents and staff members of The Southerlands. The “Our Family’s Recipes” Cookbook project was designed when The Southerlands began to research ways in which it could better assist and serve its resident population. Over the years, the community has witnessed residents who have fallen short of resources, leading to a situation of personal financial strain. In attempts to improve quality of life for these residents, The Southerlands is starting a 501(c) (3) non-profit fund designed to assist residents who become low on income during their residency. Once established, the non-profit section will be run and operated by an independent board, which will review resident requests for support and assistance in an unbiased fashion. Residents will be able to make requests anonymously to the board for assistance which will be evaluated on an individual basis. The Southerlands Cookbook is the first project of several to benefit this effort. All proceeds from our cookbook sales will go towards the development of the 501(c) (3) fund. In starting a support fund, The Southerlands wishes to celebrate the healthy longevity of its residents through the prevention of future financial strain. It is the objective of the community to enhance its residents’ retirement years by providing solutions and assistance when requested. The Southerlands looks forward to being able to accomplish this goal in the best interest of its residents. Only $10 per cookbook! To purchase or order, please contact The Southerlands located at 600 Mount View Street, Front Royal, VA 22630, 540-636-2800, or email us at info@thesoutherlands.com. We will also ship your cookbooks to you for a shipping and handling fee of $5. The Holiday Season is fast approaching and these cookbooks would make great gifts or stocking stuffers.

THE SOUTHERLANDS AND WARREN COUNTY FIRE AND RESCUE PARTICIPATE IN FULL EVACUATION OF SENIOR LIVING COMMUNITY

In conjunction with the Warren County Fire and Rescue Dept, The Southerlands held a full mock evacuation drill of their community. The drill coordinated by The Southerlands management and Lieutenant Gerry Maiatico with Warren County Fire and Rescue included multiple personnel, trucks and rescue vehicles to simulate a true evacuation experience. The purpose of the exercise was to advocate a true emergency in order to give staff, residents of The Southerlands, and the WCFR an idea of logistical needs, concerns and expectations. Because of the secrecy, all staff and residents were taken by surprise and forced to react to a building filled with artificial smoke. All parties experienced the chaos that comes with a true emergency and how each organization’s fire plan and evacuation procedure works. WCFR is hopeful other senior living organizations will take advantage of similar training opportunities for the benefit of their residents. This was a true learning experience for not only the staff and residents of the Southerlands Community but also the Fire and Rescue Staff, stated Fire Chief Richard E. Mabie, this was as real as we could get without actually having a true fire incident, the way the staff and residents acted and operated was above expectation. The total building was evacuated in less than 3 minutes and all residents and staff remained calm throughout the process. It was not until the drill was complete and everyone was told it was a test did they realize it was not real.
